The First Annual Blackout Sarasota Triathlon will be held March 12, 2017 at Lake Manatee State Park, just outside of Bradenton FL. The race starts at 8am.
The event features a .5 mile swim, 20 mile bike and 4 mile run. There will also be a duathlon (2 mile first run, 20 mile and 4 mile run) and aquabike event (5. mile swim and 20 mile bike).
There is also a mountain bike tri and a 5k standalone race.
Registration is available here:
The goal of the event is to:
–have a great race day experience for the athletes
The basis of the event is for the athletes to enjoy the course and event organization, and get a bunch of cool schwag, at a reasonable entry price.
All athletes will receive:
–an oversized finisher’s medal
–plenty of excellent quality post-race food (barbeque and chicken and veggie patties)
–excellent on-course support (ice, water, staffed aid stations, well-marked course—we follow the course marking rule of, “When the Race Director thinks the course is well-marked, double the signage!”)
We are proud to offer America’s best Athlete Satisfaction, Refund and Transfer Policy:
–you may withdraw from the event for any reason by Feb 21, 2017 for a full refund (minus credit card transaction fees)
–you may withdraw from the event for any reason from Feb 22 until race day and receive a 50% refund or 100% transfer to a future event
–you may transfer your entry to another athlete at no charge
Hey, it’s your race. We want you to have the best time possible (both athletically and fun-wise) and we all know that withdrawals, transfers and changes of plans happen. All I have to do is a few keystrokes, so why charge for that?
–The Athlete Satisfaction Policy: if you are not happy with the event for any reason after you race, you can request a full refund. I want you to enjoy the event experience, and, if you don’t for any reason, I will refund your entry fee. So you know, I have that policy for a marathon I direct in Pennsylvania, www.tworiversmarathon.com, and no athletes requested a refund after the race in 2015!
The way I look at it, athletes are looking for an organized event, with cool schwag, excellent post-race food, nice awards, at a fair price. I am committed to your athletic happiness, at least at this event (!) and I stand behind my and the event team’s efforts to bring you the best possible event.
The most updated race info will be on the event facebook page:
If you have any questions, please call me at 570 470 4922 or email email@example.com, anytime!
The race will be timed by secondwindtiming.com. They offer full 5 split timing, along with a swim check-in mat, results kiosks, live online results and an on-site TV monitor that constantly updates results (overall and age group) along with all of your timing splits.
Packet pickup will be held the day before the event, March 11, 2017, at the Lake Manatee State Park, 20007 FL-64, Bradenton FL 32414 from 4pm to 6:00pm.
The event is USAT sanctioned. The one day license fee is included in your event registration. We believe we are the first event in the country to provide this for our athletes!
Wetsuits are permitted. Current water temp is 70 degrees. Should be right around that temperature on race day, depending on rainfall (more rain means cooler water). We’ll keep water temp updated.
The swim course is .5 miles. The swim starts and finishes at the beach entry near the transition area. It is a one loop swim, swim clockwise. You will keep the buoys on your right, and make two right turns on the course.
Bike Course: the bike is a 20 mile loop around the outside of the park. The athlete exits the park about .6 miles from the transition area, makes a right on FL-64, right on Dam Road, onto Water Line Service Road, right on Rye Road, right on Rutland Road, right on FL-64, right at Park Entrance to the transition area.
Run Course: the run is 4 miles. It is the same course as the bike’s first two miles. .6 miles from run out transition to Park Exit, right on FL-64, right on Dam Road to 2 mile turnaround, head back to the Finish Line as quickly as possible!
I’ve made an orbitz and an airbnb.com search for Bradenton FL.
I’ve personally used both airbnb and have stayed at hotels in Bradenton/Sarasota. I’ve stayed at the Motel 6 at the 75/SR-64 exit. It shows at $85 a night currently, which is fair. It’s not a GREAT hotel, but clean with a good location (walkable to Starbucks!) and 7 miles from the race site. I’ve seen the hotel charge $175 a night mid-winter for snowbird pricing. Airbnb has some affordably priced rentals. Exercise normal airbnb diligence when using this service. I’ve been happy with the places I’ve booked in Florida through airbnb.
